Keeping an eye in Internet Explorer 6

Apr 2, 10:00 PM

Previously I stated I said I would support Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) until 2011. I’ve been keeping an eye on the figures for IE6’s decline as well as the rise of Windows 7.

I’ve decided to revise my date for dropping support for IE6 to anytime from 1st July 2010.

I can’t really predict exactly when I will do this as I’m at the mercy of the published statistics. But it does seem Windows 7 is starting to make it’s mark and of course the version of Internet Explorer on that is IE8. Logically as more and more people buy Windows 7 the figures for the usage of IE8 will continue to rise. Add to that the people who upgrade to IE8 anyway.

One thing I will do is keep supporting IE6 while there are still plenty of people using it. To be fair that was the main point of my previous blog post. But I will be glad to see IE6 disappear as it’s an old web browser and it does have it’s shortcomings. Those shortcomings do create more work for people like me who make web sites. Seeing IE6 disappear will make my job so much easier.

So let’s see what things will be like in the second half of this year.
